| Christian Garvin graduated UCSB in 1996 and was quickly disappointed to discover that demand was "soft" for Communications majors with minors in Sports Facilities Management. Having worked in restaurants since his early days in New York, Christian jumped at the chance to join his college pal who was working at the Fess Parker Winery in Los Olivos. After a raucous harvest spent living in a trailer with two other cellar rats and a vineyard dog, the future was set. He teamed with the Assistant Winemaker and together they launched the Kahn Winery, known for mind-blowing Syrah and a joint venture with the Frank Sinatra Foundation called "Cab Frank." After seven years he was looking for a new challenge that presented itself in the form of an abandoned tire shop in downtown Santa Barbara.
Today he produces the Oreana label, devoted to Pinot Noir, Syrah and micro-batches of Sparkling Wine, at what was once called Cellar 205 and is now Oreana Winery and Marketplace. Mr. Garvin is also a frequent contributor to Barron's, writing on the subject of investing in wine, automobiles
and luxury goods, despite owning none himself. And is the author of the upcoming
book “A Field Guide to Buying and Drinking Beer in Santa Barbara County.” |
